10 Questions to Ask Before a Facelift

A facelift consultation should not feel like a sales presentation.

It should be an opportunity to understand your anatomy, surgical options, risks, expected recovery, and realistic outcomes.

Going into the consultation with prepared questions can make the conversation much more useful.

Here are ten questions worth asking.

1. What Is Actually Causing My Facial Aging?

Do not begin with procedure names.

Ask what anatomical changes are creating your concerns.

Are the jowls caused by tissue descent? Is the neck contributing to loss of jawline definition? Is volume loss significant?

The treatment should follow the diagnosis.

2. Which Facelift Technique Do You Recommend for Me—and Why?

There are many approaches to facelift surgery.

Do not be satisfied with, “This is the newest technique.”

Ask why the chosen approach suits your anatomy.

A good explanation should make sense even without marketing terminology.

3. Which Areas Will the Procedure Treat?

Clarify whether surgery will address:

  • Cheeks
  • Jowls
  • Jawline
  • Neck
  • Submental area

Patients and surgeons sometimes use the word “facelift” to describe different surgical scopes.

4. Where Will My Incisions Be?

Ask the surgeon to show you.

Understand whether incisions will be placed around the ear, hairline, behind the ear, or under the chin.

Also ask how scar placement could affect the hairline or earlobe.

5. What Will Recovery Be Like in My Case?

Instead of asking only, “How many days until I recover?” ask:

  • When can I work?
  • When can I exercise?
  • When can I attend an important event?
  • How long might swelling remain?
  • When are sutures removed?
  • What symptoms require urgent contact?

6. What Are the Main Risks for Me?

General lists are useful, but individualized risk matters more.

Medical conditions, medications, smoking, previous surgery, blood pressure, and healing history can all influence risk.

7. What Happens If I Have a Complication?

Ask how postoperative concerns are handled.

Who should you contact after hours? Where would treatment occur if a hematoma or other urgent complication developed?

These details matter.

8. Can I See Results From Patients With Similar Anatomy?

Before-and-after photographs are most useful when the patients resemble your facial aging pattern.

Do not only look at the surgeon's most dramatic result. Look for consistency.

9. What Will the Facelift Not Improve?

This is one of the most valuable questions.

A surgeon should be able to explain limitations clearly.

For example, facelift surgery may not fully correct skin pigmentation, fine surface wrinkles, eyelid concerns, or forehead aging.

10. What Happens as I Continue to Age?

No facelift is permanent in the sense that aging stops.

Ask what changes you can reasonably expect over the following years.

Additional Questions Worth Asking

Depending on your situation:

  • How often do you perform this procedure?
  • What type of anesthesia is used?
  • Do I need neck treatment?
  • Should previous filler be dissolved?
  • Does my prior thread lift affect surgery?
  • When can I travel?
  • What medications need to be adjusted?

A Good Consultation Should Leave You Better Informed

You do not need to decide immediately.

A useful consultation should make you understand your face more clearly than you did when you entered.

If you leave knowing only the name and price of a procedure, important parts of the discussion may be missing.

The right surgeon should be able to explain not only what they recommend—but also why.
